June 9 at Club Passim: Tribute to the Irish Accordion

Boston Celtic Music Fest presents: Celtic Music Monday at Club Passim
"Thinking Inside (and Outside) the Box: A Tribute to the Irish Accordion"
June 9, 8 p.m.
Club Passim, Harvard Square
47 Palmer Street, Cambridge
Whatever one associates with the accordion -- endless choruses of "Ladies of Spain," men in lederhosen, or "Weird Al" Yankovic pop-song parodies -- it holds a venerable place in the Irish music tradition. This month's edition of Celtic Music Monday will feature a tribute to "the box" with three of Greater Boston's more noteworthy accordionists:
-Jack Conroy with the Morning Star Group (Peter Maguire, Helen Kisiel and Brendan Tonra), evoking the classic Boston Irish sound that influenced generations of musicians.
-Sean Gannon, a regular at sessions in Somerville's Burren pub who appeared in this year's "St. Patrick's Day Celtic Sojourn," with a Connemara-influenced style and repertoire
-Tess Ruderman with Catherine Joyce, representing the newest generation of Irish music

Catherine Joyce also will co-lead a special salute to her late father, Joe Joyce ("The People's Choice"), a legendary accordion player, singer and raconteur who enlivened the area Irish music scene for decades until his death last summer.
Admission is $12, $6 for members of Club Passim, WGBH and WUMB. Ticket reservations available at clubpassim.org or 617-492-7679. Information about Celtic Music Monday at bcmfest.com.
