James Joyce Course

Ireland Mapping Project

The James Joyce course (EN309), taught by Professor Joseph Nugent, has been spending the Fall 2008 semester reading Ulysses. In order to approach such a difficult text, the class has been employing numerous strategies, including a variety of web components that students use to share their reactions to the text. Students gather and process information through the wiki feature on the internal BCshare website. Each small group has their own blog and wiki where they can enter their findings and review the work of others. Additionally, students have been compiling textual data to create a Google Map of the characters' paths through Dublin. The groups' wikis will eventually be compiled and linked to the virtual map. The Office of International Programs is sponsoring Joyce in Ireland, a summer course that runs from July 31 to August 22, 2009. Class will be held at the Center for Irish Programs- Dublin Office, overlooking St. Stephens Green. Students will investigate Joyce's works within the topography of Dublin. Students will take guided tours through Ireland's National Gallery, National Museum, International James Joyce Center, and the Phoenix Park. In addition to exploring Dublin, the class will travel to Counties Cork, Meath, Mayo, and Offaly to study Joyce's background. Students will spend at least one long weekend in Galway, taking in ancient castles, megalithic monuments, and royal residences.

Professor Joseph Nugent, an Assistant Professor of English in BC's Irish Studies department, will be teaching the course. The content of Joyce in Ireland is based on EN309, a course Professor Nugent teaches at BC, which has been mapping out Joyce's characters' journeys through the streets of Dublin.
